Hi! Okay, this is me.

And I quit my career in advertising on January 1st 2012 because I didn’t like it anymore.

It took a really long time to come to that decision, and I was scared. Because:

1) I didn’t know what was next.

2) I wondered what other people would think, and

3) I’ve always needed to excel at something and have all the answers and have all my shit together and aboutazillionotherfuckingexcuses.

I had everything: the money, the job, the future, the apartment, the belongings, the job title.

But I wasn’t happy.

I wasn’t me.

To find out what was me, I needed to see what I was without all my shit together. To go into the scariest place I could imagine: a blank slate, where the only thing I know for sure is that I just quit my last desk job.

F the Desk is a journey toward purpose.

  1. As someone who is celebrating my 10-year anniversary of quitting my investment banking job to follow my heart, I say you GO girl! I just posted about how this was the best decision I’ve ever made and how it lead me to the life I’ve always dreamed of. Best wishes to you and your new adventures!

You would appreciate she and her journey of being an entrepreneur.

Thanks, Kris – that chick is full of fire. I enjoyed what she had to say about unyielding persistence and things making sense in retrospect!

It’s scary that I’m reading this. I’m afraid of what it might trigger inside.

    Hi Sarah.

F The Desk is great. Inspirational. Creative. Encouraging. And, most importantly, Questioning.

Wow. All those capital letters seem overbearing.

    Please keep it up.

Colin, who left a 15 year career in the public service last year.

Woohoo! I really appreciate the comment and I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog. I presume you were contemplating similar questions before you left public service?

      Thanks for your support!

Amazing story Sarah on us and CW – fantastic job and thank you! It always makes me teary eyed when I read about Kevin’s mom.

Small thing – would you be able to fix up the links within the article ‘Cheesewersk’ and at the links at bottom to our site, FB & Twitter.

Looks like its adding your site URL and then our site to the back of it.

    • Sarah says:

D’oh! So sorry, Tom. Turns out the http’s were missing from my code so I’ve popped them in and everything’s working. Thanks for catching that. Glad you enjoyed the story! You guys are fantastic subjects! 🙂

  10. Yay! I work a really boring receptionist job right now, where the most exciting part of the day is when someone brings in cupcakes on their “treat day.” It’s depressing. However, I am also in grad school to be an english teach, which will be SO fun because I’ll get to teach kids how to love writing and creativity, and also how to work towards careers that are the opposite of a boring desk job. Good luck on your journey!

    • Sarah says:

Hey, thanks lady! I’m glad you’re gunning like that for a future in teaching. It sounds like it brings good purpose your way 🙂 Thanks for reading.
