Complacency will kill you

Thank you to Scott Dinsmore for sharing the following with me and his readers.

If either of these things resonate with you, you need to check out this documentary trailer.

Even if you’re pretty okay with what you’re doing every day, you need to watch it now.

The point is:

IT’S NOT OKAY TO BE JUST OKAY WITH WHAT YOU’RE DOING.

The documentary is called “I’m fine, thanks”.

Pretty apt, since it’s about rampant complacency in our lives.

If someone asks you how you’re doing, wouldn’t you rather say “I’m fucking fantastic!”?

“This is a movie about the moment people realize the life they’re living is not the life that’s true to their heart… and, as a result, what they decide to do about it!”

It’s about how bullshit the American Dream is, how we’ve been indoctrinated to follow a certain path to success, and how bogus our definition of success really is.

At the end of the day, it’s about making choices for yourself and listening to yourself.

Don’t for a second roll your eyes and call it a first world problem, or say only lucky people can follow their dream, or think you can’t do it.

Stop making excuses.

Or, keep making them. Really, your life is your own. The lenses through which you look at the world are entirely your responsibility. And when you leave this world, barring you’re not an asshole, the only opinion of you that will matter is your own and I hear time goes by pretty quick.

It’s not to say you should live selfishly. It’s not to say that it isn’t supercalafragalisticfucking hard when there are obstacles (like kids, mortgage, or say, gangrene) in your way, and some people have a lot more of them.

But you’re not trapped. Life has no dress rehearsal. You’re in charge of your own happiness. And wouldn’t you rather be doing something that makes you happy most of the time?

Scott Dinsmore recently wrote about “I’m fine, thanks”:

“Being ‘fine’ is not a good thing. That is not the end goal. We are not here to be just ‘alright’ – to be average. No one benefits from a complacent life. If my friends spend their life counting down the days to the weekend, not only will they suffer, but so will I, and everyone around them.”

That is, unless you work in advertising and can drink at your desk… Nevermind.

Anyway, go check out the trailer for “I’m Fine, Thanks”.

Note: Its completion is funded entirely by Kickstart, and I have a hunch the $5 for the full documentary is fully worth my investment.

P.S. Did you know Warren Buffett compares a life spent resume building to a life spent saving up sex for old age?
